Earth Day and sustainability in the fashion industry

Happy Earth Day! Every year on April 22nd we are reminded that we have only one Earth to love and care for. On a personal level, it is a good time to take a look at the year that’s past and at what have I done to show that I love Mother Earth.  Over the past year I made the conscious decision to stop buying clothes. Looking at my spending account, I only made 3 purchases, and all from local small businesses that have a strong foundation in sustainability.

But running a business is different, and decisions are made to also make financial sense. As it turns out, being a sustainable brand actually works out for us. So, how are we sustainable?⁣ ⁣

1. We use bamboo as much as possible to make our sunglasses. Bamboo, is like no other wood, in fact, it is a grass. It is the world’s super plant because it grows fast, and it sprouts again from the same place where it has been previously cut.

Bamboo also has the qualities of hardwood, and so it is durable as well. We are strong opponents of the exploitation and use of exotic woods such as ebony or zebra wood, because these tree species are now endangered and could soon be wiped off the face of the earth.

All of our bamboo is sourced by Forestry Stewardship Council approved suppliers as further insurance that we are building product in the most sustainable way. ⁣ ⁣

2. Our cases are made from recycled paper. While this makes your case not waterproof ( watch out with that drink!) we decided to not add more plastic into this world, and paper is the best alternative we can find. We are constantly researching green materials we can use.⁣ ⁣

3. We produced very little print materials, but when we do ( event fliers, business cards etc), we print it all locally on recycled paper. ⁣ ⁣While we invest in the quality of our products and we want offer our customers a premium experience, fancy business cards are not our priority.

We’d love to answer any questions you might have about our sustainability efforts and how we are helping to create a better Earth for future generations. ⁣ Sustainability is one of the three pillars that we built this company on, together with quality and charity.
